Anne Hathaway may play a huge pop star in her new film Mother Mary, but she has no plans to turn that act into reality. Speaking at a special screening at the Metrograph in New York City on April 13, Hathaway shut down the idea of chasing pop stardom herself, saying she is not interested in turning her movie into an off-screen music career. In her words, she simply “can't see that happening.”
Anne Hathaway 'can’t see' a music career happening after playing a touring singer in ‘Mother Mary’
In Mother Mary, Anne Hathaway stars as a famous singer mounting a big comeback tour. The film turns tense when her character reconnects with her costume designer, Sam Anselm, played by Michaela Coel, bringing old issues to the surface.
Even if Hathaway would not be releasing singles anytime soon, she said she still did her homework to get into character, telling PEOPLE that she reached out to Charli xcx, who worked on the film’s soundtrack, and choreographer Dani Vitale. Hathaway said both were “able to give me a lot of insight.”
Speaking about Charli, Hathaway said, “I wanted to talk to her about the music,” adding, “She wrote such amazing music that I was going to perform,” and sharing, “But I also just had a lot of questions for her about what her life was like, what the experience of being a pop star was.”
But what stood out most for Hathaway was how demanding that world can be. She said, “And the thing that I just realized about pop stars is they're endurance athletes who can do it all in platform heels,” highlighting, “They are the most charming people on the planet, and they have this crazy self-belief.”
Moreover, the role also helped her pin down what separates her from the pop stars. In that, Hathaway said, “Like, they're so driven to share what's inside of them, and it kind of made me realize that I'm really an actress because I like to share what's inside of me through a filter.” She said, “I don't like to just go out there and be like, 'Hey, I'm here.' I like to do it through a filter or a veil.”
Anne Hathaway is not ready for a pop star career, but at least gets to be one in Mother Mary. The movie is in theaters now.
