Chris Hemsworth Says Leaving Los Angeles Was His “Greatest Decision”

Chris Hemsworth has spent a good chunk of his life playing beloved heroes on screen, but his choice to move out of Los Angeles keeps getting a lot of attention. Now, the Australian actor says moving his family out of the U.S. and back home changed everything — and, gauging from his statement on the SmartLess podcast, the actor does not miss the Hollywood mayhem.

Hemsworth explained why LA stopped working for him and his family. He said the timing was in tune with becoming a father, and the daily stress started to feel like it followed him right to his front door, as he said, “And then … you’d come home and paparazzi and all the sort of the trappings of, you know, living in that space.” Moreover, the Thor actor called leaving Los Angeles the “greatest decision” he has made.

He pointed out that his work life already kept him traveling, which made staying in LA feel pointless, explaining, “Like nothing was shooting there. We were filming kind of everywhere else.”

Why Chris Hemsworth Finally Walked Away From LA

After leaving Los Angeles, Chris Hemsworth and his wife, Elsa Pataky, live in Byron Bay, Australia, along with their three children — India Rose, Sasha, and Tristan. Reports have described their main home as a custom-built mega-mansion in Broken Head, with locals sometimes calling it “Fortress Hemsworth” because of its scale and Realestate.com.au estimating the property’s value at roughly $30 million to $50 million.

The home reportedly features six bedrooms, a media room, a private gym, a spa, a games room, and a rooftop 50-metre infinity pool facing the Pacific. Moreover, the outlet also reported an extensive solar panel array on the roof.

Hemsworth says the best part is that he feels like he gets a real break when he walks through the door, saying, “Like coming home for me is – it feels like a holiday,” and describing a life with “big farm and horses and motorbikes and surf.”

A family decision with wife Elsa Pataky

Hemsworth and Pataky married in 2010 — and on SmartLess, Hemsworth called the move a family decision, which was ultimately tied to raising kids outside a place where attention can get out of their hands.

But it was not all roses for Hemsworth. He shared a detail from long before movie stardom, revealing that his first job involved fixing and cleaning breast milk pumps, as he stated on SmartLess, “So, I’d have a toothbrush and spray and wipe and – that was my first job.” And now, he has come a long way since.

Hollywood still calls Hemsworth

Chris Hemsworth may have left Los Angeles, but he has not disappeared from the big screen. As such, he travels for filming and press, then returns home to Australia when the job wraps — and still remembers his family in those moments. When Hollywood honored him with a Walk of Fame star in 2024, he used the moment to spotlight Pataky’s support. During the ceremony, he said, “I want to say thank you to my beautiful wife,” calling her “endlessly encouraging and supportive,” and finishing with a heartwarming “I love you.”
