Ariana Grande has made one of the biggest business moves of her career, officially launching her own label, BabyDoll Music — and sources claim that Taylor Swift’s rigorous fight over owning her masters might have inspired this step. Grande’s new album Petal will be the first major release under the label. And for the pop icon, this is more than just about putting out another record; it is about ownership and building her career on her own terms — something that may change the way Grande releases music.
Ariana Grande takes control of her masters with BabyDoll Music after Taylor Swift’s long masters fight
The Sun reported that Ariana Grande saw Taylor Swift’s plight with her masters, which ultimately inspired the “the boy is mine” hitmaker to launch her own label, BabyDoll Music. Launching her new label would mean that Grande will own the original master recordings for Petal, which arrives on July 31.
This move gives the pop artist far more power over her music and a much larger share of the money it can make over time — and instead of handing over that ownership, she has opted for a setup where Republic Records in the US and Island Records in the UK will still help release the album. Meanwhile, Grande will keep hold of the masters.
An insider told The Sun, “Ariana has seen what happened with artists like Taylor Swift being taken advantage of with their masters, and has taken control,” adding, “This new set-up means she can earn a lot more if it’s a success, and can do things exactly how she wants to.”
Notably, Swift turned the fight over music ownership into one of the biggest stories in pop, and her battle urged many artists to think about the ownership of their work. Grande now reportedly seems to be following that path in her own way.
Petal, Ariana Grande’s eighth studio album, will feature 12 tracks that she co-wrote and executive-produced with Ilya Salmanzadeh. Meanwhile, the singer’s tour is set to begin on June 6.
