Russell Brand Reveals What Ended His Marriage to Katy Perry

Russell Brand appeared on The Megyn Kelly Show, talking about his past and what actually ended his marriage to Katy Perry. On the April 22 episode of the talk show, Kelly sat down with Brand as he promoted his book, “How to Become a Christian in 7 Days,” and their chat covered everything from fame, addiction, and Brand’s legal case, which he says he will face in October. But one of the most striking moments was when the conversation turned to his previous marriage to Perry.

Russell Brand admits he “didn’t handle that marriage very well” when speaking of Katy Perry

Katy Perry and Russell Brand were two of the most discussed stars of the early 2010s, married in 2010 and split 14 months later. Now, on The Megyn Kelly Show, Brand acknowledged regret about how he dealt with that chapter of his life, admitting, “I didn’t handle that marriage very well,” blaming most of it on the spotlight the former couple had on them.

As the discussion continued, Brand described how constant attention can warp a relationship. And so, he spoke about feeling overwhelmed while crediting Perry’s work ethic and drive as he took responsibility for the pressure he brought into the marriage, confessing, “Here’s me taking total responsibility for all the mistakes I made in that marriage.” Brand added, “I felt like I was inadequate and not enough on my own.”

Additionally, the actor acknowledged that his insecurity pushed him toward commitment before he understood what he actually needed, saying, “I pushed to get married early because I felt inadequate and insecure and like I wasn’t enough.” He added that he felt like “if I was married to her, I would somehow be a better person and more important.”

But Russell Brand’s loneliness and expectations allegedly clashed with Katy Perry’s career, as she chased her dream on a massive scale — and looking back, he called it a lesson he learned later, one he now connects to his faith and the way he tries to live.

The interview made room for jokes and political talk, but more than a decade later, Brand publicly took accountability for what he said he did while he was with Perry. He presented it as a warning about what fame can do when insecurity runs deep.
