Taylor Swift shared the family drama behind one of her biggest songs, Love Story, and she has no complaints.
In her New York Times Magazine interview — part of the paper’s “30 Greatest Living American Songwriters” — Swift said Love Story came from a very personal moment from her teenage years, revealing that she wrote the song at 17 when she was upset with her parents for not letting her go out with an older guy. Now, she seems to have no regrets.

Talking about Love Story, Taylor Swift told The New York Times, “I think the first time I felt I don’t care if people hate this because I love it so much was when I wrote the song ‘Love Story’ when I was 17, sitting in my bedroom, mad at my parents because they wouldn’t let me go on a date with a guy.” She revealed that the “guy” was “too old so I shouldn’t have been on a date with him anyway.”
Moreover, Swift joked, “And this is why you need to discipline your kids because they might write songs that go [to] No. 1,” nodding to the track being the first country song to reach number one on the Pop Songs chart. The song, released in 2008, became one of the defining tracks of her early career, turning teenage heartbreak and frustration into a huge hit.
Swift also said that strong emotions shaped many of her songs. She said, “I have this very strong opinion that when you’re young you feel things on such an intense and detailed level,” explaining, “There’s an attention to detail when you’re 17-22 years old and you’re longing or you’re reaching and grasping but you’re never holding someone’s attention or someone’s love or someone’s dedication.” The Cruel Summer hitmaker added, “You can’t understand why you spend all day thinking about it.”
That emotional honesty has long been part of Taylor Swift’s appeal, and this latest story behind Love Story only adds to its place in her catalog.
