During the episode, she spoke about her bond with Swift and stated, “Well, Dorothea’s about me, one of her songs.”
The moment was part of a much bigger timeline for Gomez as she said, “And I feel like a lot of moments [we had were] huge moments that were self-defining from relationships to family to love to hate, all of it in between, we were figuring it out because I was 15 and [Taylor] was 18.” Gomez added, “We didn’t really know like what was going on, and so we’ve never seen each other any differently.”

Though Swift has not publicly confirmed the inspiration behind the song, fans had their reasons for suspecting Dorothea was about Gomez long before the Rare hitmaker said a word. As such, listeners focused on details in the song that seemed to line up with Gomez’s public story. This included references that reminded fans of her beauty brand success and her early childhood pageant background through her family.

Gomez said, “Back then, [Taylor] was like, ‘I just wrote this song about us,’ and it was just our story.”
Looking at where they are today, Gomez admitted the song hits harder now. She said, “Now when I listen to that song, both of those things have happened for us,” adding that it “makes me want to cry.” Besides, she called it “the sweetest thing.”
Gomez says she and Swift “survived it” together
Gomez painted her friendship with Swift as two people who understood what the other lived through. She said she and Swift “survived it as best as we could.” Moreover, she fondly stated, “It’s absolutely unbelievable to come from 17 years of friendship from multiple heartbreaks and love stories and fun stories in life.”
